Learning Support Team

Learning support

The school’s learning and support team plays a key role in ensuring we meet the specific needs of students with additional learning and support needs, including disability.

The team:

  • supports teachers in identifying and responding to the additional learning needs of students
  • facilitates and coordinates a whole-school approach to improving the learning outcomes of every student
  • coordinates planning processes and resourcing for students with additional learning and support needs
  • designs and implements the support required to build teacher capacity so that all students access quality learning
  • develops collaborative partnerships with the school, parents and carers as well as other professionals and the wider school community.

Meet our School Learning Support Officer and BVC Therapy Dog in Training Lady Dior

Our Learning Support Officer is part of our Wellbeing Team and works in the Learning Centre where they support student’s wellbeing and academic success with the help of our Therapy Dog in Training Lady Dior aka Dior. Dior loves people and is privileged to have the opportunity to spend time supporting students' learning and wellbeing whilst in the Learning Centre. Dior is well familiarised with the school and its community as she has been attending since she was 12 weeks old.

The Learning Support Officer and Dior make a great team in assisting students to gain confidence, improve motivation towards learning, decrease learning stress and anxiety, express their feelings appropriately and enhance relationships.

Students who are having a rough day emotionally find the Learning Centre a calm place to reconnect with their learning and re-focus, Dior is always ready for a pat or cuddle from a student in need. Dior is able to entice conversation from even the quietest student wanting to talk about their own experiences with animals and often want to talk about their pets at home. Staff find this helpful in making positive connections with the students, which in turn creates a productive and cohesive working environment.

During recess and lunch you will often see Dior walking around the playground interacting with the students and brightening their day with Dior’s wag of a tail and eagerness for a pat from the students.

The staff and students recognise Dior as a positive member of the school community and love having her at BVC.

The Learning Support Officer and Dior are also active members of our Learning and Support Team, Positive Behaviour for Learning Team (PBL) and Positive Partnerships Team.

Dior works Tuesday - Thursday during school hours and you will find the Learning and Support Officer with Dior by her side most days.
