Aboriginal Education

At Berkeley Vale Campus we are committed to improving the educational outcomes and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students so that they excel and achieve in every aspect of their education.

At Berkeley Vale Campus we are committed to improving the educational outcomes and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students so that they excel and achieve in every aspect of their education.

Berkeley Vale Campus has a dedicated Aboriginal Education Team which works closely with all staff and our local Aboriginal Community through the Kuriwa Aboriginal Educational Consultative Group. In addition to employing tutors for our Aboriginal students, our campus regularly employs Aboriginal community members to support art, cultural, academic and dance projects.

Throughout the year, our Aboriginal students are given the opportunity to participate in a wide range of activities including AECG leadership workshops and assisting with community events, university visits, cultural festivals such as GulangFest and NAIDOC, art and writing competitions including the Patrick White competition, sporting events such as the Margret Merritt Reconciliation Touch Football Cup and the Central Coast Academy of Sport Indigenous Talent Identification Day, health and wellbeing programs such as the Ngura Program, Sista Speak, Bro Speak and a host of other opportunities.

Our NAIDOC Festival is a whole school event and each year raises over $1000 to support an Aboriginal charity or local Aboriginal event.

Berkeley Vale Campus has developed Aboriginal Student Leadership (ASL) roll call groups. This allows the Aboriginal students to gather daily and check in with each other.  ASL is a vertical roll call with a mixture of ages within the group. This allows for the older students to mentor the younger students and provide more support for the Aboriginal students whilst in the playground and when they have questions about where to go for help.

All of our students have the opportunity to spend a day in the bush at Wyrrabalong National Park in Year 7 learning about bush foods and medicines, storytelling and traditional games.
